School History :
St. Charles Lwanga Girls’ Training Centre, Kalungu is situated in the Southern part of Uganda. The school started in 1967 by the White Fathers, a Missionary Congregation for Africa. It is a Mission-Catholic founded school owned by the Diocese of Masaka and built on 30 acres of land granted by the Diocese. It is an all girls’ boarding “O” and “A” level school. The founder of the school, who was also its first Headmaster was Rev.Fr. Emiliano La Croix. Since 1984 to date, the school is run by the Religious of the Sacred Heart, an International Congregation of religious women. The school was registered by the Ministry of Education as an “O” level center in 1972, obtaining a number of UO/163. Then as an “A” level Centre in 1994.
In establishing this school, the founder had two major objectives in mind:
- To train girls in practical skills such as typing, sewing, home-economics, carpentry, etc… bearing in mind that most village girls would drop out of school and these practical skills would enable them to become self-reliant.
- To provide academic education as is done elsewhere in secondary schools.
It is this original bias and emphasis on practical skills that accounts for our official title: “Kalungu Girls’ Training Centre”. The original and primary purpose of this school was to offer an all round education to girls. We have tried to keep to this original mission and the practical skills we offer in addition to the academic work are a great attraction to many students and parents. These practical skills prepare the students to become self-reliant even though they drop out of school. Our girls have the potential to become great leaders and responsible citizens.
